When it was announced that Erik Morales would be fighting for the vacant WBC junior welterweight crown, the fight was met with mixed emotions. While there were several people who showed fondness for Morales being able to get a crack at a fourth world title, the simple fact that previous champion Timothy Bradley had been stripped for no sound reason was pretty ridiculous.
Morales was initially set to face off with grueling pressure fighter Lucas Matthysse on September 17th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, a fight that couldn?t help but to get the blood boiling, but it would be a huge letdown when the Argentinean pulled himself out of the contest shortly before the fight because of a viral infection. Morales was then lined up with unbeaten yet unknown Pablo Cesar Cano and the stage was set.
