During a press conference held earlier today to announce the signing of former jr. welterweight champion Devon Alexander, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer revealed that he plans on speaking with representatives of HBO and Showtime next week about the possibility of staging a welterweight tournament. “My idea is to approach Showtime and HBO, both of them, and see if there’s an interest to actually put together a tournament within the 140 and 47-pound weight class,” Schaefer announced.
“I would think probably 4, maybe 6, at 147,” he explained as he gave details about how he envisioned the tournament. As for who would participate, Schaefer made it clear that the possibilities are limitless given the many differenct characters around the jr. welterweight and welterweight divisions. “Maidana, obviously, already indicated that he’s interested. If there are big fights for him at 47, he would be happy to move up. You know, you have Lucas Matthysse, which obviously already fought Devon. You have, again, Victor [Ortiz], you have Paulie [Maliganggi], you know, you have a lot of different, how shall I say, different characters I think which would make for a very colorful and interesting tournament.”
