BOXING is back, and so is Floyd Mayweather!
The flashiest of the flash takes on new champion Victor Ortiz in his first fight since May 2010 when he beat Shane Mosley after coming very close to getting dropped early on.
That fight proved that Floyd had the heart and determination to go with the undoubted talent and skills. We had all been waiting to see what would happen if he got hurt and he showed he could come through a crisis.
But instead of pushing on from that, Mayweather just disappeared and didn?t want to know the sport.
I found that very frustrating, and I think boxing fans as a whole did too as they had now started to give Floyd the credit after seeing him prove his heart.
Victor Ortiz is a man who has come back from the brink of retirement himself. After quitting in his fight against Marcos Maidana and his subsequent post fight interview, fans questioned his heart and desire for the game and we all thought he was finished. He?d had huge hype surrounding his career as he was Golden Boy?s main prospect.
But Ortiz proved himself and his heart when stepping up to take on Andre Berto for the WBC Welterweight title. That was an amazing fight that saw both fighters getting dropped twice before Ortiz walked away as the new champion.
It was good to see Ortiz come through adversity in that fight, restoring his credibility in the process. I?m a fan of Ortiz as he comes across as a nice kid, and came through some really dark times as a kid.
Is he good enough to beat Mayweather? I don?t think so. I think Mayweather has picked this fight because Victor is a southpaw and he has one eye on a possible Paquaio showdown. But Ortiz can be a little green and I believe Floyd thinks this could be an easy night for him.
Mayweather is smart. He needed to come back with a fight of importance, a fight that would interest people. But he also wants to look good against an opponent that could be seen to be dangerous so he can get the acclaim and I think this fits the bill.
Ortiz will go for this, he?s a southpaw and he can punch too. He?s also fast handed so has some tools that could give ?Money? some problems to solve. But he hasn?t anything that Mayweather hasn?t seen before.
