The time has come for Davao City’s Diosdado “Prince” Gabi to show his real worth when he climbs the ring this morning (Manila time) to fight Jose Alfredo Tirado of Mexico in Stockton, California.
This will be Gabi’s US debut, his first major step towards a shot at the world crown since leaving behind his family and friends in Davao City where he learned the rudiments of the sport.
The 10-round fight will be at 116 lbs. and is scheduled at the Stockton Civic Auditorium.
The 26-year-old Gabi, who hails from Lasang, Davao City, is dedicating the fight to his family and North Cotabato Governor Manny Pi?ol.
“I dedicate my Sept. 23 fight in Stockton, California to my family and Governor Pi?ol,” Gabi said in a statement sent to Davao sports journalists earlier by his manager Michael Koncz.
Pi?ol is Gabi’s former chief backer who was responsible for guiding the boxer’s career and making him of what he is today.
The World Boxing Council in the flyweight division ranks Gabi No. 5.
Another Filipino boxer, Randy Suico, will see action today against Javier Jauregui also of Mexico.
The fight will be at 135 lbs. and is scheduled at the USC Lyon’s Center in Los Angeles.
