“It’s better that we train hard so I can give him a real fight”…”neither too will this reality: fighting runs in their blood”…all recent comments made by some of the biggest names in the sport. Looking back at this week’s key quotes of note, Boxing Scribe Vivek Wallace offers his own unique perspective, giving fight fans “a little something to think about”. Check it out!
“I don’t drink much because if you drink beer and eat junk food, you put on weight. We shouldn’t be over-confident. It’s better that we train hard so I can give him a real fight. People know why I train hard and why we started training early. It’s ten weeks before the fight.” – Manny Pacquiao to Ronnie Nathanielsz of the Daily Inquirer
Perspective: Rarely do we get the opportunity to hear directly from Manny Pacquiao unless he’s entrenched in a training camp and there’s a need to promote a fight. As he noted, we’re a full 10 weeks away from his nearest showdown, yet there he stood, probably dripped in sweat from a workout in preparation for a fight months away. Why the extra motivation, some may ask. Good question. Very good question. Conventional logic tells us that he realizes he’s facing a man who has had his number twice in a row, and despite his well noted improvement, there’s a lingering cloud of concern ready to rain on his parade and anything less than his best could result in no need for “the test” as a loss would clearly seal the deal.
