Last night, inside of the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, Andre Berto became a champion again after scoring a fifth-round stoppage over brave Jan Zaveck. The action was hot from the get-go and Berto had success in the early rounds working Zaveck?s body with crisp shots while also finding time to pound him upstairs as well.
Zaveck enjoyed a strong fourth and seemed to be coming on harder in the fifth. But in between rounds his corner elected to stop the fight after taking a look at the grotesque swelling and cuts around his right eye.
It was an unfortunate ending to a fight that was shaping up as a dandy, but you can?t knock the effort of either guy. Following the victory, Berto let it be known that he is open to a rematch with Victor Ortiz, who defeated him this past April to capture the WBC welterweight crown in dramatic fashion.
Ortiz is now penciled in for a September 17th showdown with Floyd Mayweather inside of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Berto will surely be an interested spectator.
