Suico loses, But Gabi wins in US bouts

World Boxing Council no. 3 Randy “Komong Bato” Suico flubbed in his second fight in the United States, absorbing an upset majority decision loss at the hands of ex-IBF lightweight boss Javier “Chatito” Jauregui in their 10-round bout yesterday at the Lyon Center in Los Angeles.

Reports from ringside indicated that Suico was tentative during the fight, and was dominated in the early goings with Jauregui’s overhand rights and counter-punching. Clearly the stronger fighter between the two, Suico picked up the pace in the later rounds, stalking his foe until the final frame.

Judge Chuck Hassett saw it 95-95, while Jack Reiss and Ray Corona both saw it 99-91 for Jauregui.

Suico’s loss brought his record to 23-2, 20 KO’s, while Jauregui improved to 50-12-2, 34 KO’s.

Meanwhile, another Filipino, WBC no. 5 flyweight Diosdado “Prince” Gabi, escaped with a fifth-round technical decision win over rugged Mexican Jose Alfredo Tirado in the main event of a card held at the Stockton Civic Auditorium in California.

Gabi was ahead on all three judges’ scorecards–50-45, 49-46, 50-45–when the fight was stopped following a recommendation by the ringside physician to halt the bout due to a cut suffered by Gabi near the left eye.

The win improves Gabi’s record to 26-2-1, 18 KO’s, and gives him a chance to move up in the rankings.
