Scoop Malinowski Column: Not Your Typical Column Episode 4

Your August 14, 2011 article ?The Master Plan? is another ruse from the collaboration of Mayweather, GBP and HBO to mislead the public for their own benefit and not to the mainstream boxing fans and or sports fans. Looks like Top Rank has been duped again by HBO into awarding the PPV rights of ?Paquiao vs Marquez?.

Any legal possibility to rescind the PPV rights to HBO? If so, will you help publish Notice to the world thru you article to? Boycott HBO as well because they themselves are the principal co-conspirator to dupe the mainstream sports particularly boxing fans?. I guess, in the minds of these ?Big Three? everybody is gullible that they can easily lead everyone?s mind anywhere their whims dictate. -Charlie A. Ponce

Scoop Reply: Charlie I agree with you, I, like you, strongly believe HBO and Golden Boy are NOT going to do their best on behalf of boxing fans to make the only fight the world is vehemently and passionately demanding to see. I believe plans are afoot to try to rebuild Mayweather into a superstar brand via smart business decisions and extreme caution (ducking & dodging), and Golden Boy and HBO know that to sign a contract to fight Manny Pacquiao would be suicidal for Mayweather?s controllers who are desperate to control an American star, which they fancy Mayweather has the potential to be manufactured into. I do not hear any positive vibes coming from HBO about producing Pacquiao vs. Mayweather for 2012. Agree with you, a boycott of Mayweather-Ortiz would be a smart way for boxing fans to unite against the direction HBO and Golden Boy seem to be leading away from what the public is demanding ? Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr in 2012.

A memory from my Arthur Mercante Sr. interview archives: ?I did a fight at the New York Coliseum, it was a Swedish giant against an Irish fellow. It was a fight. Back and forth, bloody match. Then at the end of the eighth round, the Irish guy is winning and he turns around and walks back to his corner. I said, ?It?s not over yet.? He said, ?Ah, I?m through.? Then he wanted to speak to the crowd so I gave him the microphone. He said, ?This is the last fight you?re gonna see of me. Here I am fighting my brains out with five kids in Boston and I?m getting a big $50. After paying my trainer and manager I?ll get about two bucks. And I don?t even know how I?m getting home.? Great story. Chico Vejar did the same thing at St. Nicholas Arena in 1964. He said, ?This is my last fight. I?m retiring. I wanted to go out a winner. Thank you for your support. Good night.??

So do you ever wonder if boxing referees unfairly favor one fighter over the other as it appeared to happen in the Agbeko-Mares fight this past weekend? Consider this anecdote from the Hall of Fame referee Arthur Mercante Sr.: ?Alexis Arguello boxed for the WBC Super Featherweight title held by Alfredo Escalera in Puerto Rico (Escalera was making his tenth defense in 1979, televised by ABC). Arguello really gave him quite a shellacking and I wanted to stop the fight in the eighth round because it was very, very, very bloody. I wrote an article for The Ring (magazine) called ?The Bloodbath of Bayamon.? And I described the fight in detail. I wanted to stop the fight but the doctor ? from Puerto Rico ? said ?NO! Don?t you dare stop the fight!? In the ninth round, I called him in again. All I could hear is Howard Cosell saying, ?I?ve never seen such a bloody thing in all my life. The blood?s all over my white suit and I can?t understand why Arthur Mercante?s not stopping this fight!? He wouldn?t permit me to stop it. He said there?d be a riot, I?d be killed. In the 12th round I called him in again. When he left the ring I pointed to him and bellowed as loud as I could, ?THE DOCTOR STOPPED THE FIGHT! He didn?t, but I saved my life. Escalera had a hair lip ? a cut from his lip all the way up to his nose. Separated. He was bleeding, swallowing blood. Just a disgraceful sight.?
