Manila readies big Pacquiao welcome

BARRING inclement weather, the “champion’s motorcade” that Manila Mayor Lito Atienza and other city officials have prepared for Manny Pacquiao will go on as planned.

Pacquiao-who stopped Mexican Hector Velazquez in the sixth round last Sunday in Los Angeles to set himself up for a grudge rematch with Erik Morales early next year–is scheduled to arrive at about 5 a.m. today via Philippine Airlines flight PR 103 from Los Angeles, California.

Organizers of the Manila event, led by Manila Sports Council chair Arnold “Ali” Atienza, said the motorcade will start from city hall at 9:30 a.m. after a brief ceremony.

Residents are expected to shower Pacquiao, an adopted son of Manila, with confetti during the motorcade which carries the theme “Kampeon ng Maynila, Kampeon ng Bansa.”

Atienza also paid tribute to Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista and Brian Viloria who also won their fights by knockouts in the Pacquiao undercard.

Atienza added that the victory of the three Filipino boxers should serve as “a signal to each of us to unite and work together so that the real capabilities and potentials of our people would be realized.”
