The HBO Face Off featuring Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Victor Ortiz revealed very little of what we already knew. Oritz talked about how he was going to beat Mayweather and how he wasn’t going to allow Floyd to take his belt. Mayweather rebutted saying, “They put forty-one in front of me, and forty-one came up short.” It?s all the same trash talk dialogue between Mayweather and whoever his opponent.
Throughout the face-off, Ortiz was confident and revealed a very determined demeanor. He wasn’t going to allow Mayweather to get into his head. You gotta love the kid’s heart. Ortiz opened as a 7-to-1 underdog and he clearly didn’t care. Ortiz has been fighting ever since he was young. He and his siblings were abandoned by their mother at a very early age, so why would he be scared of Mayweather? Sans the Maidana fight, Ortiz is one tough hombre.
Mayweather made a point when he said that he beat Shane Mosley after Mosley was coming off a hell of a performance against Antonio Margarito. He came back and beat Juan Manuel Marquez, even though Marquez was clearly the smaller man, after a two year layoff. Marquez was (and still is) an elite fighter and Mayweather deserves full credit for his win against him. To add to Mayweather’s argument, he also beat an undefeated Ricky Hatton. Even if most fight fans love to hate on Floyd, he fought fighters that were in their primes and were coming off huge wins.
Not a slight against Manny Pacquiao, but he fought Hatton and Mosley after both fighters were clearly not at their best. Hatton was close to being shot and Mosley was just plain old. Nothing against Pacquiao because he’s still the best fighter today, but for the sake of argument, Mayweather does make sense.
Come September 17, Ortiz has to back up all the talking. He has everything to gain and nothing to lose. With Mayweather it?s different. He has to beat Ortiz to set-up a monumental showdown with Manny Pacquiao next year.
