After signing a new multi-year deal with Top Rank last month, Bantamweight king Nonito Donaire isn’t keen on wasting any more time out of the ring, and is apparently planning two fights before the end of this year.
According to a report earlier today by the Philippine Star’s Joachin Henson, Donaire is planning to fight in October and then December, and in naming potential opponents said:
?We?re looking at Oct. 1 or 15. I still don?t know whom I?ll fight but I?d prefer a champion. It could be a Japanese or a Panamanian or whomever. Then, I?m hoping to fight in the undercard of the Antonio Margarito-Miguel Cotto”
The Panamanian and Japanese champions Donaire mentioned are none other than WBA ‘Super’ champion Anselmo Moreno and WBA regular titlist Koki Kameda. As for the undercard bout of Margarito vs. Cotto bout, a move up to super bantamweight is expected, possibly to take on WBO belt holder Jorge Arce.
It’s an ambitious schedule from Donaire, who in between the two bouts is getting married, and whether he will be able to secure fights against two champions in three months is questionable.
Donaire last fought in February, stopping highly regarded Fernando Montiel in two rounds. Since then a promotional disputes has kept him sidelined, which came about after he signed with Golden Boy while still under contract with Top Rank.
