In this weeks email bag, we’ve got questions regarding Erik Morales and Manny Pacquiao, a question on the weight divisions some boxers may apparently undertake to land a lucrative payday, along with a symposium about Sugar Shane Mosley meeting Zab Judah in the ring, for which an ardent Mosley supporter wants to see.

According to Boxrec.com Javier Jauregui is rated as a Lightweight. Yet he will be fighting Suico at the super featherweight div. Can you explain this?

Jauregui has fought as a Mexican Featherweight Champion in the ‘90’s having held two distinctive knockout wins over Jose Luis Castillo. You could say by fighting in the junior lightweight category that it opens the doors for the better competitive markets. Bigger money names too. We’re going to see it with fighters of caliber names in larger to smaller quantities for that to generate up their chances fighting in two divisions themselves. Though there was a time when if you fought at one weight class the other ratings group would drop you. Something which still can happen, but I would suspect not somebody that made a name for themselves like having a darned good fight at either weights wouldn’t be subject to. Certainly a ratings department like “The Ring” wouldn’t come across to touching it.
What if both Manny and Erik lost? Is there’s any rematch on it? But I think these fighters will win their respective fights.

I agree that I think they’ll both win. As for the rematch clause on their contracts, I don’t think so, not because of what happens, but more so cause Erik has 135 LBS in mind to break JC Superstar’s record of three titles in three distinctive weight classes. Honestly speaking though, unless Roach changes his mind and places Manny in on the lightweights, we’re talking the last of Morales Vs Pacquiao here.
Dear George, I am glad that Shane Mosley has decided to take his time and fight tough top twenty fighters instead of rushing to fight one of the elites. He would always fight back-to-back super fights without taking a tune up back in his glory days. As a fan I want to know what your take on him is?
Do you think he can climb the mountain one more time? I think he could beat Judah because he is a smarter fighter and he might be a touch quicker. What do you think?

First let me thank you for bringing such an insightful account on Sugar Shane Mosley, both from a fan’s point of view and a follower about his illustrious career.
I’ve always thought about Sugar Shane’s offensive arsenal to be very fluent coming forward. He’d zero in better than most fighters could get to the target, and had deceptive speed in that category. His skill as a Lightweight was sheer class. However, he might’ve had three of four fights in the welterweight division to be wearing on him. Those break periods by themselves you’ve just described were necessary at the time.
Nobody has touched on who is stronger between Zab and he. Mosley fought a decent experienced fight against Estrada, but that was a strength contest. Against Judah to test strengths is at a minimum, so you would figure in that contest would be more than likely endurance and speed. Zab’s built for tempo, and just as compact. If it boils down to those expectations, I’m not so sure Judah would want to match power with Mosley. You’d have to also consider at this juncture the seasoning Mosley underwent. Mosley currently fights in the light middleweight category. Zab’s a big time player in the welterweight division.
I’d have to give Zab the edge in boxing intelligently here. Considering also that Judah is not the same fighter when he fought Tszyu as a junior welterweight, unless Mosley catches Judah sleeping walking, which wouldn’t be a smart thing to do…. it would be an uphill battle pending for Mosley to press.
Hi George – i once read from an Internet article that marquez wants a rematch with pacquiao, but since manny has moved-up on weight class there seems to be a problem with a rematch. Do you think there promoters can work something out? With all due respect to marquez, i still and really think that pacquiao won that fight.

It’s more today about getting the promoting going then the weighs, particularly with only three or four pounds between them. I don’t know how other promoters aren’t feeling it, know what I mean, especially with 122 LBS., for a possible booming category to be picked up in the featherweight classes. You never know if Marquez might get his rematch perhaps. From what Manny’s trainer Freddie Roach’s own accounts, he’s not going beyond fighting junior lightweight, and shouldn’t have a problem at all as a featherweight either way.
I thought the judges might’ve called that one right with a draw, but could have had Manny winning it by the narrowest of margins too. It was a terrific fight.
