HOT POTATO EXLCUSIVE – In an exclusive interview Tuesday at Fortune Gym on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, celebrated Harvard lawyer Robert “Bob” Arum, who was instrumental along with US Senator Harry Reid in making the Obama-Pacquiao meeting at the White House a reality early this year, sees relevance for Philippine icon and Congressman Emmanuel Pacquiao to meet the Holy See.
“I knew the Holy See has to be very pleased with Pacquiao’s stance on birth control and his opposition to passing out condoms,” says Arum referring to Pacquiao’s opposition to the Reproductive Health Bill in the Philippines which has been regarded to “set the stage for other anti-life laws or so-called D.E.A.T.H. bills (acronym for death, euthanasia, abortion, two-child policy, and homosexuality)”. The said proposed Bill is principally authored by Congressman Edcel C. Lagman of Albay.
As known, Pacquiao, a devout Catholic, campaigns for natural family planning method, particularly abstinence, which is consistent with the stance of the Catholic faith, through which Pope Benedict XVI seeks to become the moral authority of the world. In other words, the Vatican is demanding a role in regulating world politics and economy based on its Christian ethics and that’s where Pacquiao’s task as a lawmaker fills the role of advocacy on social conscience and responsibility.

Arum stresses: “The question is timing; There is no question that if Pacquiao has the time, we could arrange a meeting for him with the Pope. And I’m sure the Archbishop of the Manila could do the same thing.”
Meanwhile, in another exclusive with a Pacquiao confidant who is an active cantor of the Roman Catholic Church, Helena Buscema says the Filipino icon is eager to visit the Pope at the Vatican. And, in fact, Buscema also notes that an arrangement can easily be done anythime with her current contacts in the Vatican.
