LOS ANGELES?Known as “No Mercy,” Cebu-born Mercito Gesta is next in the long line of great Filipino fighters.
With the encouragement of his father, a former amateur boxer, the former kick boxing prodigy got into boxing 8 years ago when he realized boxing offered bigger prize money.
Gesta is now part of Top Rank Boxing?s growing stable of world class Filipino fighters which includes Manny Pacquiao, Nonito Donaire Jr, and Bernabe Concepcion.
Gesta?s record stands at 21 wins and no losses. His one draw was a result of an accidental head butt. He has now climbed up the rankings as one of the top lightweight contenders.
Manny Pacquiao’s Hall of Fame coach Freddie Roach has been giving him tips and has been training him along with former Pacquiao sparring partner, middle lightweight champion Amir Kahn.
He will make his Top Rank debut on July 9th fight against Francisco Lorenzo, a former world champion with a 33 and 9 record. He will be the undercard of the lightweight title fight between Brandon Rios and Urbano Antillon.
Gesta admits that he is already eyeing the winner of the Rios-Antillon title match. “My dream is a title fight. So hopefully after this fight, Top Rank will give me a title fight,” said the 23-year-old Gesta.
Gesta only has 11 knock out victories, but 7 of his last 10 fights have ended with knockout wins.
