Among the Brits who will be sitting in a ringside pew at a soccer stadium in Hamburg Saturday night and believe that underdog David Hayemaker Haye will shock the world and Wladimir Klitschko is Haye?s longtime pal and super middleweight champion Carl Martin Froch.
That?s right, the ?Sheriff of Nottingham? who has a huge unification bout against unbeaten American Andre Ward on Oct. 29, fancies the loudmouth Haye being able to pull off the massive upset.
(See “Little Big Man” Holyfield speaking to Jeff Powell, Daily Mail, on how Haye can win it.)
Minutes ago, I spoke to ?Frochie? and he and other fight figures were relaxing on the eve before Friday?s official weigh in.
Froch, 33 and the owner of a sparkling 28-1, 20 knockouts record, just has a good feeling about his former amateur teammate?s chances of taking Klitschko?s two title belts and adding them to his own WBA strap.
?I think that David can do it, I really do,? Froch said. ?Obviously, Klitschko is the big, big favorite and he?s beaten down so many opponents. But I say, look at his record, and who were most of the guys he beat, nothing that great, really. Advertisement
?I fancy David doing the job here, I?m not just saying it because we?re friends.?
(I wonder who the better trash talker is, Mr. Haye or Clubber Lang?)
Froch, who holds the WBC belt and beat Arthur Abraham and Glen Johnson after losing a close decision in Denmark to Mikkel Kessler, doesn?t buy Ward being invincible.
?No, I don?t view it that way at all,? Froch said. ?Ward?s not a big puncher, that is key. I will be able to walk right through whatever he throws.?
Froch said the site for the Ward fight has not yet been agreed to.
?I knew the last two fights (in the Showtime Super Six Tournament) would be in the United States. I had no problem with that. I like fighting in the States. It?s nothing new for me.?
The Johnson-Froch bout was held in Atlantic City. Las Vegas looms as the probable site for Froch-Ward.
Bay Area resident Ward has been in a comfort zone fighting in Oakland.
