NEWARN, CA?Begging your indulgence for a transient leave of absence from the fistic precincts to acknowledge receipt of a letter from a mentor, who has given her best to save our once-faltering grandchild named Keana.
To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing in reference to Keana Rivera and her application for a scholarship with Bay Section CASCWA. It is my understanding that your organization awards scholarships each year to deserving graduating seniors.
I met Keana Rivera over a year and a half ago when I came to teach at Crossroads Independent Study High School in Newark, California. At the time, Keana was a junior beginning her second year at Crossroads.
Keana was troubled when I first met her. Besides the typical teenage angst, Keana was trying to cope with the death of her best friend. Some days Keana had trouble just getting out of bed to face the day. As one might imagine, simply getting to class and completing homework in an independent setting was arduous at times. However, even with inconsistent attendance and completion of assignments, there was always something about Keana?s desire to learn that impressed me. Her goals have never been just about getting the credits to finish a class or completing an assignment just to have it finished. Keana loves learning.
When I saw Keana?s name on my class roster this year, I was glad to see I would be working with her again. I wanted to see what a summer of growth had done to her. I wasn?t disappointed. Keana has come a long way this year. Her desire to learn has continued, and with it she added a more mature sense of responsibility. Keana comes to class regularly, ready to learn. This improvement is evident in her last report card of straight As.
Keana is an excellent candidate for college and anyone who can help make the path a little easier for her will not be disappointed.
Sincerely,
Valerie Smith

Dear Mrs. Smith,
From our heart of hearts, thank you so very much. As a poet aptly put it once ?Give to the world the best you have and the best will come back to you.?
Sooner than later if I may add. And to our beloved Keana?the world is waiting for you.
You definitely have what it takes so embrace that challenge and yell to the world you can do it.
Ever grateful,
Hermie and Tina
