As we all already know by now, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is back! It?s been over a year since we last saw his beautiful defensive dominance displayed inside the ring. I must admit that Floyd proved me to be very wrong. After Floyd dominated Sugar Shane Mosley last year in May, I then couldn?t help but to keep replaying the second round of that fight when Mosley broke through that great defense and blasted Floyd on not one but two seperate occasions. Yes, it?s very true that Floyd did in fact dig deep, real deep, and was able to do the smart thing and hang on to Mosley to survive the very scary round. So after watching that replay over and over again, I thought to myself that A. Floyd Mayweather Jr. will never fight again, because even though he was able to bounce back like a real champion, the point is that he was still shook, or B. that if Floyd Mayweather Jr. were to stay fighting, that he would do so by facing only feather fisted fighters from here on out. Then came the talk of Floyd possibly facing Paul Spadafora, it was then that I realized that the feather fisted conquest was about to begin.
Then Victor Ortiz fought Andre Berto in a slug fest, during the fight, HBO cameras zoomed in on Floyd Mayweather Jr. sitting ringside with 50 Cent. I then thought to myself, Could Floyd simply only be there to scout Andre Berto? Because surely, there is no way that Victor Ortiz can survive the blazing power punching Berto. Soon as that thought entered my mind, Ortiz then began to take over and it turned out that it was Berto who couldn?t handle the balls of fire being thrown his way by Vicious Victor Ortiz. At that point, I then felt that since Floyd was there sitting front row witnessing Ortiz conquering Berto, that Spadafora was about to hit the jackpot. So I thought, then things began to clear up for me.
Roughly about 2 weeks after Ortiz beat Berto, I had a phone conversation with Ortiz, it was then that I asked him if he felt that with him being a southpaw with power, if he felt that Floyd may want to step back in and face him to help Floyd get a closer better look at someone who just may be the closest thing to that Pacquiao monster. Ortiz?s reply to me was one that I will never forget, Ortiz never really gave me a straight answer, but when I asked him, Ortiz reacted as if someone had just given him the winning jackpot lottery numbers. About 2 weeks after that, I then texed Ortiz?s manager and asked him straight up if a Mayweather/Ortiz fight was being discussed. His response to me was ?Abslutely not?. It was right then and there that the last piece of the puzzle was given to me and I now realized that Mayweather/Ortiz was going to happen sooner than later. Here I had the fighter who was super excited just talking about it, as if the contract had just been inked, and on the other hand I had the fighters manager being super tight lipped, so something had to give.
I never thought that I would say this, but the return of Floyd may lead into bigger and better things for the sport. It can very well mark the beginning of hit after hit. How do I come to these candy laced thoughts, you ask, allow me to pick up the paint brush and get my Salvador Dali on. [ I could have easily said Picaso, who happens to be my all time favorite painter. But as sick and nasty as Pablo was, Salvador Dali who happens to be my #2 favorite painter, may just have been the nastiest most surreal painter of all.]
Best Scenario possible- The Mayweather/Ortiz winner faces the devil himself, the monster that is Manny Pacquiao. The Godzilla event! No disrespect to Juan Manuel Marquez, but Marquez facing Pacquiao at an ounce above 140 pounds will be his demise. I feel like I have already seen Pacquiao/Marquez 3 and it?s going to be a horror film. Pacquiao is going to finish Marquez in 8 rounds or less.
Next Scenario- The Mayweather/Ortiz winner to face the Khan/Judah winner. This plan will work best if Khan is to defeat Judah, reason being because I just do not see Mayweather facing Judah again or Ortiz facing Judah when a fresh name with an undefeated ledger will be on the table. Who, you ask?
Timothy Bradley, that?s who. Chances are that after Bradley?s contract ends with Gary Shaw, that Bradley will ink a deal with Golden Boy or Top Rank. The tough decisions for Bradley do not end there. Bradley will then be ofered the Mayweather/Ortiz winner if he signs with Golden Boy, then Top Rank will offer Bradley a shot at Pacquiao. It will be then that Bradley must ask himself who in fact really has more ?Star Power?, Mayweather or Pacquiao?
