When I watched the Floyd Mayweather Jr Vs. Victor Ortiz press conference last night on UStream, I saw an energetic Ortiz exit the vehicle signing gloves, shaking hands, smiling, taking it all in. When Floyd made his entrance, he seemed a bit more stoic, perhaps preoccupied.
When the two fighters met on the stage, it was Ortiz that looked to be the instigator. Mayweather even seemed a bit surprised that the young Ortiz would choose to bump heads and chests. Floyd smiled at Ortiz, which seemed to have angered Ortiz a bit more and then some small pushing ensued. Both men were separated and the press conference began.
Ortiz would talk first and again, he was aggressive and very cocky. The entire time Ortiz was talking, Floyd looked straight ahead and kept a poker face expression for the majority of the time. When it was time for Floyd to speak, he got up to the microphone and it was mannersville from that point on. Floyd did nothing but compliment the young Ortiz. He thanked him for stepping up to the plate by taking the fight. The whole time Floyd was being Mr Nicey Nice, Ortiz looked at him with this frown on his face as if he just got grounded for not doing his homework.
Don’t be fooled by any of this nicey nice stuff. Floyd is still looking at a major lawsuit that was dropped onto his head by Manny Pacquiao for slander. Floyd has to be nice at this point in the game. The last thing that he needs is to get into a fist fight or any kind of altercation with Ortiz at a press conference. With that said, there was one very genuine act of kindness that Floyd did do, and that was to shout out to the late Genaro Hernandez. Floyd has been extremely good to the Hernandez family. He has helped Genaro’s loved ones cope with their loss by paying for all of the funeral costs. Floyd should be commended for that, and this writer is doing exactly that. Advertisement
Mississippians that I have spoken to about Floyd’s recent change of attitude had mixed feelings. I spoke to both Mayweather fans and Mayweather haters. Both of which commend Floyd’s kindness toward the Hernandez family by the way.
I spoke with Jacob Sanders, a Mayweather loyalist for years. Jacob was eager to throw his two cents into the conversation, “Floyd is nowhere’s near as bad as you media type make him out to be. He’s under the microscope so the man could burp too loud in public and get arrested for disorderly.”
Keven Manship of Canton, MS had this to say, “Floyd isn’t fooling me. He is only being nice now because he knows that he has a few court dates on the horizon. If he does elude jail time, he will be right back at his arrogant cocky ways.”
Mayweather Vs. Ortiz may be a closer fight than people think it will be. Even the legendary James Toney thinks that the fight will be closer than people expect.
