Excuses, excuses

JUAN Manuel Marquez got the biggest break in his rugged career when Manny Pacquiao agreed to contract terms that yields profitable financial gain for both of them.

Threat of retirement, long the bane of fighters nearing 40 led Marquez to rev up his motordrive in nailing down Bob Arum?s offer that could net him a tidy stash for his eventual retirement.

Isn?t that the route Pacquiao?s victims usually take after a hard night?s loss?

Not that Marquez is pasture-bound, but that?s what happens usually to Manny?s badly beaten victims.

It is possible that the year-ending matchup of Manny and Juan Ma will lead the winner to engage in battle the controversial Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Will this be Bob Arum?s first 2012 move?Pacquiao versus Mayweather in Manila?

Keep in mind that the launching of the Pacquiao-Marquez fistic conflict will take place at the Araneta Coliseum?site of the legendary Ali-Frazier heavyweight battle on Oct. 1, 1975.

Now, moving to an altogether unctuous arena where annoying debates are raging on why Sugar Shane Mosley wanted to quit after Manny downed him in the third round.

Why is it that Mosley?s lopsided loss to Pacquiao contnues to resurface in cyber space thru the blogs as news worth revisiting?

Is it due to a sold-out arena when he fought Manny at the MGM Grand that raked in high pay-per-view marks that broke a record of sorts?.

Blisters caused by ill fitting shoes is the answer preferred by Shane?s corner.

Wrong.

Try pediatric surgery.

I know the agony of defeat comes in various hues and while it is conceded that it was pointless for Mosley to continue, the reason cited as cause is as preposterous as the repeated claim of the world coming to an end.

Some five months before he started training, Mosley had surgery to repair seriously busted tendon/ligaments in his Achilles heel.

The most telling aspect of this hushed story was its ill-effects on Shane when he disobeyed his doctors moratorium for a year after surgery.

An admonition he ignored understandably for multi-million dollar earnings.

Tight fighting shoes? My foot.

Reminds you when Pac blamed 99 cents socks for past footaches?

This is not a weighty story that captivates the fan?s imagination yet some writers are groaning over the failure of Shane?s handlers to stop his cheerless bout with our man from Sarangani. Worse, they?re heaping the blame on Nazeem Richardson for not halting it after it became unevenly balanced in Manny?s favor.

Unfair!
