Pacquiao agent Koncz: Sugar Shane Mosley’s corner should’ve stopped fight

Southpaw Supremo Manny Pacquiao?s right hand man and uber agent Michael Koncz said late Wednesday night that he was ?not aware? that Sugar Shane Mosley had vociferously expressed a desire to quit on his stool during the May 7 lopsided bout in Las Vegas.

?You?re telling me now that Showtime has it on tape, on their microphone so we know it?s accurate,? Koncz told me by phone from Los Angeles. ?So we know it happened. But I was not aware of it and neither was Manny.?

Showtime?s nifty Fight Camp 360 program captures the Mosley corner drama with Mosley wanting to exit stage left while determined trainer Naazim Richardson puts the kibosh on his fighter?s impulse forcefully.

What Koncz questions, in light of this amazing revelation, is why Richardson, the veteran trainer from Philadelphia who also handles 46 year old wonder Bernard Hopkins, did not comply with Mosley?s fervent desire for no mas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

?Why wouldn?t the trainer do what the fighter asks him to do, especially when it?s some boxer with four or five bouts but Mosley, a highly accomplished and experienced veteran? I wonder why Richardson did not follow the instructions from his fighter.

?If there ever was a situation where Manny wanted a fight stopped, you know it would be stopped, for sure. This is a decision that the great fighters get to make.

?In this kind of case, I?d have to say that the fighter knows best,? Koncz said. ?I questioned why the (Antonio) Margarito corner did not stop the beating he took from Manny, although that situation was a little different and now I question why they didn?t let Mosley quit.?

Koncz said he knew that Mosley ?did not want to engage? when Pacman floored the Hall Of Fame level Californian in the third round. Advertisement

?From then on, Mosley would not engage, it wasn?t Manny?s fault. I don?t want to say that Mosley was running the rest of the bout because that?s not a polite way to say it. So let?s just say, that after Shane fully tasted Manny?s (punching) power, he got on his toes and kept it moving.?

Does Koncz now feel as though Pacquiao sort of got ?cheated? out of a stoppage and being able to do something Floyd Mayweather Jr. did not do against Mosley, who also went 12 full rounds with him?

?No, I do not,? Koncz said. ?Manny was dominant and he made Mosley avoid engaging him in a way that Mayweather could not do.?

The Canadian native said that, while Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer, were dropped from Pacman?s drug cheating defamation lawsuit that the Pinoy Idol will continue and may even expand the lawsuit as to some fellows last name Mayweather.

?Nothing is for sure in litigation or when you get in front of a jury,? Koncz said. ?So, when both sides can agree to settle a lawsuit and both sides are happy, that is a good thing. But we?ve noticed further defamatory remarks about Manny from the Mayweathers and our lawyers may add those to the continuing litigation.?

Koncz said the making of the Nov. 12 Chapter 3 bout between Pacman and Mexican ringmaster Juan Manuel Marquez had ?absolutely zero? to do with the lawyer crafted apology statement from Schaefer and De La Hoya.

Finally, I asked Koncz, out of habit, if there was anything fresh to report on Mayweather versus Pacquiao.

?No, nothing,? Koncz said. ?Calls were made to their side, they have our numbers and no call has ever been returned. End of story.?
