Cabazon, California-Ninety miles East of Glendale, on Saturday night, Morongo Resort and Casino hosted a tremendous night of professional boxing promoted by Top Rank. Capacity crowd enjoyed Top Rank Live boxing show, part of which was televised by FSN .An off TV action was just as scintillating as the televised part.
In a very physical eight rounds lightweight contest, Manny Pacquiao?s managed fighter, Michael Farenas (30-3-3,25 KO’S) overcame an early deficit and won a hard fought majority decision over African veteran, Daniel Attah (25-7-1,9KO’S). While one judge scored the fight even 75-75, the decision was overruled by two others 79-71 and 78-72 in favor of Filipino fighter. Manny Pacquiao he is not, but southpaw Farenas fought with inspiration and heart to earn well deserved victory over more skilled opponent.
With Freddie Roach?s apprentice, Jesse in his corner, Farenas came out with bad intentions, but his punches were wide and obvious. Attah was able to handle early pressure and counter effectively. Confidence of African fighter grew as he out boxed and out fought hard charging Filipino in the second stanza. It was an ugly fight, but Attah was controlling the action. Farenas kept pressing forward in the fourth, but every time he charged he ate hard accurate counters.
Persistent Farenas had his moments in the fifth trapping his adversary on the ropes and unloading. Attah took it well and countered effectively with one right hook that visibly wobbled Filipino fighter. Farenas continued to apply pressure in the sixth. Attah went down seemingly in pain from a body shot, but referee called it a slip. As the action continued in the sixth Attah was penalized for excessive holding. All of a sudden the fight was in the balance. Farenas continued to attack in the seventh and dropped his adversary with a barrage of punches. Attah beat the count and appeared to be completely spent and out of balance, but miraculously was able to finish the round on his feet. Newly signed by Top Rank promotions, Gabion Saenz (3-0,2KO’S) from Indio, California made a quick work of a feather weight, James Owens (4-4,2KO’S) from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Saenz dropped his foe with a body shot and then finished the job with a barrage of punches that forced referee Zach Young to end the contest at 2:40 of the first round.
Russian born lightweight, Vahe Saruhan based out of Los Angeles looked impressive in his professional debut against a veteran from Huntington Park, California, Jose Pacheco(2-15-6).Trained in Van Nuys by Joe Goossen, Saruhan attacked from the onset and didn’t stop until his opponent was on the canvass. Referee Zach Young reached a count of ten and waved off the contest at 2:59 of the very first round.
58-56 twice and 59-55 were the scorecards after six highly contested rounds of welterweight showdown between Ricky Duenas (9-1,3KO’S) from El Monte, California and Alfredo Rivera (1-8) from Los Angeles Ricky was a winner by unanimous decision in a very competitive fight.
Bantamweight Roman Morales (3-0,2KO’S) from Fresno California was just too powerful for his overmatched opponent, Santiago Alfonzo (0-2) from Garden Grove, California. Morales dropped his opponent with left hook to the temple and then again with the right hand at which point referee stopped the contest at 2:51 of the very first round.
