Floyd Mayweather Jr. has never been especially known for dealing with criticism, constructive or otherwise, so we can only imagine how he?s responding to an article in the historic, African American weekly magazine JET right about now.
Chris Yuscavage, a writer from Hamilton, NJ, basically undressed ?Money? in the piece which runs in the June 6 edition of Jet (with lovely and talented actress Garcelle Beauvais on the cover). The title of the opinion article may hurt the sensitive Mayweather more than the seven paragraphs which follow it.
More accurately, I should say the magazine?s cover line pointing to the piece. I know it jumped off the newsstand in downtown Brooklyn where I bought Jet for $1.99 Friday morning.
?WILL MAYWEATHER KILL BOXING??
In the body of the piece, the author writes about how the Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao Dream Fight has bumbled and stumbled and never been made:
?Then Mayweather refused to sign the contract. And then his advisers claimed the contract never existed. Then Mayweather didn?t like fighting at the time. And then the money wasn?t right. Then?well, you get the point.? Advertisement
The scribe opines that Mayweather-Pacquiao must happen because ?it?s the match that every boxing fan wants to see.?
I doubt we?ll see Mayweather and his ?Mayweather Mafia? fan base, including ?Ravi Gupta? the Internet Pacman hater, blasting a link to this article out on Facebook or Twitter.
For the unitiated, Jet and sister monthly Ebony have long been a bedrock of black American news and culture.
Or, as Editor In Chief Mitzi Miller writes in the same issue:
?For generations, JET has served as the definitive voice on everything that happens in the African-American community. If it was hot, if it was happening, it was in JET. Period.?
Looks like this issue of JET crash landed on the Mayweather camp.
