Seares: Miriam takes on Pacquiao

HOW would Manny Pacquiao fare against Miriam Santiago in the controversy over the reproductive health (RH) bill? And how would the senator fare against the boxing champ if they trade punches instead?

Where each excels, he or she would maul the other.

Santiago would show, as she did, Pacquiao’s deficiency in language and logic. While Manny as a congressman already delivered speeches, they were ghost-written and his colleagues were kind not to pepper him with questions.

On the RH bill, in which Pacquiao has taken the Catholic Church’s side, Miriam punched holes on his defense, deriding his Bible ?misquotation? (“Go forth and multiply” not “Go out to the world and multiply”) and accusing him of hypocrisy (he abhors contraception even as his wife uses the pill).

Word-lashing was within Miriam’s rights, had she done so civilly. She hadn’t and wouldn’t. She’s one of the nasty people alive who love being mean and get high by hurling insults.

We can stand Santiago’s alleluias about her own mental acumen. We even enjoy her barbs as she froths over one thing or another. But should she shut Pacquiao or anyone except senators out of the debate?

Manny as House member has the right to persuade people to oppose the bill. Miriam as senator also has the right to make her own pitch.

Not all bright

Leave the forum to the senators? Santiago should check again whether all her colleagues are intellectually qualified to talk about the bill.

She may find, not to her surprise, there are also senators who are, by her standards, “dumber” than Pacquiao.
