Gejon intensifies training, spars with Mayol

With a month left from his awaited championship fight, mandatory challenger Eriberto “Yukka” Gejon turned to his best friend and current top-ranked WBC contender Rodel Mayol for his final preparations.

Gejon will challenge Japanese champion Yutaka Niida for the WBA minimumweight title on Sept. 25 at the Arena in Yokohama, Japan.

Gejon and Mayol were part of the Cebu boxing team that captured numerous gold medals in the mid 1990s. Both also fought in the same class, although managed by different handlers.

Mayol is fresh from a month-long training in Japan, where he stayed with his new manager Yasuo Matsuoka.

Gejon, currently ranked WBA No.2, WBC No.8, IBF No.8 and WBO No.5, will surely get a good chance of improving his defense against the hammer-fisted Mayol.

Both fighters are undefeated with Gejon sporting a 21-0-1 slate with 13 knockouts, while Mayol is 21-0 with 16 KO victories.
