THE young Rommel Asenjo will be in the biggest fight of his career as he will be gunning for a world title against interim World Boxing Organization mini flyweight king Raul Garcia on April 30 in Mexico City, Mexico.
Despite Asenjo?s inexperience at age 21, his promoter, ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer, believes in the skills of his newly acquired boxer who might just score an upset against Garcia. The champion has only been beaten in his career but has never been knocked out.
?It will be a tough fight for Asenjo as this will be his first time to fight abroad.
We know that he has the talent to grab the title but it would depend on how he motivates himself mentally,? Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
The two-time world champion Garcia, 28, has only been beaten once in his career, by unbeaten South African Nkosinathi Joyi by unanimous decision last year in South Africa. Garcia has an impressive record of 29-1-1 with 17 knockouts.
Asenjo?s record is 20-2 with 16 KOs.
Asenjo has left the comfort of his hometown in North Cotabato to hone his skills at the ALA Gym for his upcoming world title bout and has been sparring with ALA mainstays Milan Melindo, Rocky Fuentes and Marjhun Makahilig.
?He is doing very well and he feels confident coming into the fight,? said Aldeguer.
ALA Gym conditioning coach Pio Solon has been helping Asenjo in his conditioning for his upcoming fight.
?We have asked Pio to supervise his conditioning but it?s a bit too late when Asenjo came to our gym. The full conditioning program may not be implemented,? said Aldeguer.
Asenjo, along with trainer Dante Lerio, manager Manny Pi?ol and ALA Promotions vice-president Dennis Ca?ete will be leaving for Mexico on April 26.
