Mexican-Americn lightweight Robert Guerrero (28-1-1, 18 KOs) will return to the ring Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas against Michael Katsidid, but the 28 year old is already looking ahead to bigger and better fights.
During the media junket corresponding to Saturday night’s event, a pay per view broadcast headlined by Erik Morales and Marcos Maidana, Guerrero put out a laundry list of desired foes with Manny Pacquiao at the top.
“I want the big fights against Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Floyd Mayweather Junior,” said Guerrero, the fighting pride of Gilroy, California.
Unfortunately, the fighter coined “The Ghost” seems to be hallucinating, as two of three men listen are unlikely future foes.
Mayweather Junior has been sitting on the sidelines since May, 2010, and is looking for a reported 100 million dollars to fight Pacquiao. It can be assumed that Guerrero is not on a bleep on “Money’s” radar. Advertisement
Pacquiao is scheduled to fight Shane Mosley in May, and promoted by Top Rank – which is locked in boxing’s version of the Cold War against Guerrero’s promoter, Golden Boy Promotion. Not only is Guerrero not an attractive opponent in relation to name value, or competitive resume, but the state of the promotinal beef between Top Rank and Golden Boy makes a fight even more unlikely.
Marquez will be his best bet, a fight that Guerrero says he has been after for well over two years, as both men are promoted by Golden Boy and Marquez is without a future opponent.
Whatever the future may hold for Guerrero, a likeable fellow who cited Jesus Christ as his favorite super hero in a press release today and who has been by his wife’s side as she battled lukemia, he must first defeat Katsidis on Saturday to even dream of facing boxing’s prime time player.
