CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — A British former world rated professional boxer believes the Filipino amateur boxers have the potential to make it big in international boxing.
Wally Townsend, an English national born in London, England who now resides in Camiguin province said the Filipinos interest and heart and inherent skills could be harnessed for international competitions.
Townsend, formerly a world-rated Junior Middleweight boxer at the age of is married to a Filipina—Jane Rementiza from Camiguin. He now trains the Camiguin amateur boxing team. He also heads the Camiguin Chapter of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP).
Since becoming trainer of the Camiguin Tigers Boxing Club, the club performed impressively in several national amateur boxing tournaments.
Thirteen-year-old Johnrey Aborot of Mambajao won the gold medal in the recently concluded Misamis Oriental Youth Amateur Boxing Tournament.
Another Camiguinboxer Joel Grado of Sagay bagged another gold medal during the Tagbilaran City, Bohol Governor’s Cup Circuit in the welterweight division while Rey Aclo of Mambajao got silver medal in the pin weight division.
Five other Camiguin boxers also won medals in the recent national youth amateur boxing tournament in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.
Gino Jamago of Sagay won the silver in the flyweight division; Johnrey Sagon of Guinsiliban got another silver in the junior flyweight division; Joel Grado of Mambajao also got a silver in the bantamweight division and Johnrey Aborot. Wendel Aborot won a bronze medal.
