Well, well, well, look what we have here today. It appears that former pound for pound champ Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is finally fed up with his idleness and is considering a possible summer comeback fight. If there?s a smoke, there should be a fire somewhere, right?
From what I read in a recent article, Michael Acri (Paul Spadafora?s promoter) was quoted saying that “I was approached about the fight. I spoke with Don (King) and a few other people (from Mayweather?s camp). Paul (Spadafora) is interested in the fight. He’s wanted this fight for a very long time. Paul is ready to finish what he started ten years ago. We’ll see what happens”.
So that means Floyd Mayweather, Jr. doesn?t want to fight Pacquiao for a 1-fight $50 million guaranteed purse (apparently he wants $100 million 1-fight deal). He is now considering an option with Spadafora for somewhere less than eight million dollars. C?mon!
If we look at this in a less-than-serious approach, there may be some sense of why Mayweather?s team is considering Spadafora. First, the guy?s a lefty, has a body structure suited for lightweight division, and has tattoos (get the picture?). Second, they are almost at the same age where Floyd is one year Paul?s senior. Both have had a long lay-off. Paul has had much more hibernation of four years compared to Floyd?s two and a half (Including his first retirement). The third and most important factor is… drum rolls?please; both of them have had frequent visits from the law of their respective country law enforcers. You could do a little research and you will be surprised they have a lot in common.
But, seriously, I just don?t get it. Don?t get me wrong about Paul Spadafora, who was a former IBF 135-lb world champion and is among the few undefeated boxers today (45-0, 19 KOs). He was a good boxer and an HBO fighter during his prime. Yes folks, you read it right, during his prime. What other benefit, besides getting easy money of course, do you think Floyd will get? None, to the point it reaches a very high-negative value. According to Floyd he doesn?t need tune up fights.
Floyd Mayweather, Jr. may act childish and be gibberish sometimes but I think he?s too intelligent to even ?think? about considering this option. This is just another gimmick from both camps who want to create a little noise.
