Earlier today the final press conference for this Saturday night’s Miguel Cotto-Ricardo Mayorga bout had a little bit of a twist to it. Before the official presser, which took place around Noon, the two men both spoke to the press in the basement lobby inside of the Studio 8 ballroom, giving some insight into their professional and personal careers.
Mayorga was the first to speak on the dais and again started to take shots at Cotto, calling him a coward for the way he was stopped against Antonio Margarito in July of 2008. Mayorga claimed that a victory over Miguel, one in which he swears he will score an early round stoppage in, will hopefully lead to a huge fight with WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao.

A half hour after Mayorga was done speaking we saw the arrival of Cotto, who spoke with a steely demeanor about the challenge of Mayorga and how much he has learned from his new trainer Emanuel Steward. Cotto brushed off any trash talk that Mayorga had to throw his way and said that he is as focused as he has ever been heading into the fight.
After Cotto was done speaking all parties would head upstairs to the main ballroom inside of the MGM where more media personnel and boxing luminaries awaited. From there the official press conference took place as promoters Bob Arum and Don King took the microphone.
If successful against Mayorga, Cotto could be in line for a summer rematch against Antonio Margarito, either in New Jersey or Las Vegas, but in Mayorga it’s hard to think of him having more of a stubborn or aggravating opponent.
Three days and counting until Cotto-Mayorga goes down…
