There’s nothing worse than having a falling out with your own parents. We only get one set of parents in life, so when that relationship gets damaged, it’s a tough pill to swallow. There have been many father son combinations in boxing, and many of them end up with issues. Roy Jones Jr and his father have had their ups and downs. Shane Mosley and his dad have had their issues. Peter Manfredo Jr and his dad have also had issues, it just happens that way sometimes.
In the case of Nonito Donaire and his father, the situation is bad, but fixable. Recently 8CountNews.com aired a video interview with Donaire manager Cameron Dunkin. During the video interview, Dunkin tells all on how Donaire Sr took money from his son, gambled with it, and didn’t pay Nonito’s corner people for meals, and other expenses. He also went on the record and blasted Donaire Sr for having control issues.
Recently, I spoke with Nonito about the situation with his dad. I shared with him my own personal issue that I had with my dad before he passed away in 2006. Thankfully, I was able to reconcile with my father before he passed away. I am not sure how I would have dealt with it if he had passed away before I was able to fix things. Like I said, we only get one dad and one mom in life.
With that being said, Nonito Donaire has some very legitimate points and probably made the right decision by moving on and parting ways with his dad. Nobody is perfect in life, so hopefully both men can get together at some point and work things out.
Money is the root of all evil. Oh man is this ever true. Money has destroyed more relationships than I can count, and it appears as if it’s about to do it again. Why is it that once money gets involved folks become different? Greed? Yea that’s part of it. Greed, selfishness, power, control, all of these things come to fruition once money gets into the mix.
I spoke to a few of my fellow Mississippians about the Nonito Donaire situation. The majority of the folks that I spoke to have sided with Nonito and support his decision to part ways with his father. I spoke to Charles Wood of Jackson, MS. Charles is a huge boxing fan, and has been following the career of Nonito Donaire.
Charles shared his thoughts on the Donaire father situation, ” I think that none of this should have been made public, but now that it has they both should just talk it out. I don’t blame Nonito for moving on though. If it’s true that his dad was clipping money and being greedy, and gambling, then he has a legitimate reason to be upset.”
Father and son is more important than trainer and fighter. Hopefully Nonito Donaire’s dad will accept his faults and come correct. Hopefully both men can sit down and talk this out. Hopefully they can enjoy the relationship that a father and son should be able to enjoy.
