“Bob is here. He’s the guy in charge of my career and as always, we always go for the way he wants me to go. We always want the big names and Margarito is one of them,” stated WBA jr. middleweight champion during the post-fight interview shortly after his 12th round TKO victory over two-division world champion Ricardo Mayorga. In the past, Cotto swore he’d never give Margarito another opportunity to make money with him due to the fact that Margarito was caught loading his hand wraps just one fight after their first encounter, a bout that Cotto was battered, bloodied and badly beaten down in. Apparently, the attitude of the Puerto Rican superstar has now changed and a showdown with Margarito, who was in attendance for Cotto’s victory over Mayorga, will likely move forward this summer in New York, on June 11th during the weekend of The National Puerto Rican Day Parade.
Although Mayorga was game and had his moments, forcing the champion into heated exchanges at times, in the end, it was the more technical Cotto who found a home for his more accurate punches, landing a perfect left hook that floored Mayorga in the 12th.
