IBF JUNIOR flyweight mandatory challenger Wyndel Janiola knocked out Ricky Escaner with a punch to the jaw at the 1:33 mark of the second round of a scheduled 10-rounder headlining the Independence Day “Showdown sa Liloan” card last Sunday in Liloan, Cebu. Janiola thus boosted his chances for a crack at IBF 108-lb king Will Grigsby of the US within the year. Janiola’s handlers are negotiating with the representatives of Don King, Grigsby’s promoter on the possibility of a Grigsby-Janiola title showdown. In the chief supporting bout, Jun Pader prevailed by split decision over Greg Mangan in another 10-rounder. Other bouts saw Pingping Tepura beat Allan Dugang over eight rounds and Mercito Gesta knocked out Roldan Malinao at 2:46 of the 2nd round. Alvin Mundala and Dodong Salde fought in a technical draw at 2:50 of the third; and Roel Honor stopped Manny Pacquoan at 2:27 of the sixth.
