Donaire, Jr evolving for the better

Casual Talk from HOLLYWOOD, California – A great deal of discussion and debate have centered around Nonito Donaire, Jr. and his estranged father, Nonito Donaire, Sr., in recent weeks. In short, the father-and-son tandem after Donaire, Jr.’s successful title defense against Mthlane back in 2008 had a falling out. Donaire, Jr. fired his mentor – his hardworking father with a voice and a bearing of a traditional military commando and one of a tough martial arts disciplinarian. That was the outward manifestation of the boiling issue between them.

Revisit: Andales Revelation

We know this is a personal issue. But Donaire, Jr. has become a public figure, subject to public scrutiny in some matters of concern. I am sure the issue with his father is still not resolved and deeply embedded in the consciousness of the affected. Even the boxing fans took part of it very well. Most lambasted the younger Donaire. Few others blamed the elder. The rest really do not care. But, le me tell the last time I spoke to the Donaire,Jr days before his fight last night was one of revelation. He said he longs to be with his father again, sometime. He said whenever he sees his father he goes to him and hold his right hand and touched it on his forehead. For Spanish-influenced, it’s a sign of respect and reverence to the elders. There, I believe how much the younger really wants to reestablish that relationship and revive it for the better. They may not be the same again.

But, the making of it is a way of mending what was misunderstood. I would not be banking on anything other than the best for the two. For the fans, haters and quiasi ones, I must say the healing is there. It’s a process and on progress.

Last night’s scene at the Mandalay Bay Events Center was such a revealing manifestation. It was the first time I saw Donaire, Jr lifting up his eyes upward. He is transcending … becoming more spiritual. Before the fight, he appeals to his friends and fellow countrymen to pray for him and nothing more. I believe he has shown enough sincerity, at least based on my recollection.

Yes … nothing more but for the healing of the two and their family.

I rest my case.
