If they ever match Saul “Canelo” Alvarez against the goofy comedian named Carrot Top, then I say bet on the redhead.
Maybe, by that time, the extreme, high pressure buildup of the Golden Boy promoted Alvarez as the new savior of Mexican boxing will have risen to the level that we are instructed to genuflect and only refer to him as Don Freckles.
Joining in the open conspiracy to oversell Alvare
z is willing accomplise Don Jose Sulaiman, who in his dotage aches for another MX ring icon along the lines of Julio Cesar Chavez. Of course, I refer to pere and not to his underwhelming boxer son.
As for Canelo, he’s getting a test Saturday night on HBO but it is hardly a rigorous final examination.
Fighting Matthew James Hatton, or Matty Hatty as I like to call him, is more like a pop quiz and an open book one at that.
If Hatton’s last name was Jones, Smith or Cheswick, he wouldn’t be in this fight. His 41-4-2 record is not impressive, ditto for his mere 16 knockouts.
Not to be overly critical of 20 year old Alvarez here. He does have real skills but I fear that his undoing will be that his hand speed is adequate at best. As for his ability to take solid shots, well Matty Hatty is not going to test his chinny chin chin, is he?
It’s happened umpteen times in boxing. The Hype Train is five stations ahead of Alvarez.
But he does seem to have a fan friendly persona.
Let’s not fill out our ballots on Canelo just yet.
I don’t like his failure to make weight TWICE at Friday’s weigh-in. De La Hoya excuses it, saying, well he’s just a growing boy. But failing the scales TWICE could be a sign of a lack of discipline and a gap in professionalism.
Either that, or maybe Canelo just wolfed down an extra chalupa or two.
Worst scenario, he’s just moved from 147 pounds to junior middleweight.
Chavez Jr. appears destined to fight at middleweight and the Arum-De La Hoya promotional war rages on so the two Mexicanos are unlikely to fight.
Redhead or Deadhead?
The jury will consider what should be a drubbing of Matty Hatton as an opening argument for Alvarez, no more and no less.
But right now, until proven otherwise, the kid bears watching.
Besides, De La Hoya and his henchmen do not wish to confuse fandom with facts.
