Manny Pacquiao is on top of the boxing world and Floyd Mayweather can’t stand to watch. Their megafight may never happen and only Mayweather is to blame.
The art of boxing and the art of self-destruction have a long history together. For some tragic reason, too many fighters have been lost to their own demons, their promising careers often cut short due to impulsive behaviors, unhealthy living habits, and an inability to cope with life outside of the ring.
Comfortable and safe in their squared circle home, but lost souls outside in the real world. The fight game has changed from the age of bare-knuckle boxing in English fields to the modern age of ppv millions and the Las Vegas strip. What hasn’t changed, though, is seeing fighters self-destruct before your eyes. Tom Molineux was the first African-American to fight in a title bout
Tom Molineaux, the African-American bare-knuckle boxer, won his freedom from his Virginia plantation owner because he was so talented and moved to England to pursue fame and fortune. He ended up fighting and losing twice to Tom Cribb for the English heavyweight title (though the first fight he deserved to win) and then battling alchohol abuse. Molineaux died from liver failure in Ireland in 1818 at the age of 34, penniless and homeless in a foreign world. Ads by Google CKO Kickboxing Mp3 Mobile Have a heavy bag But don’t use it? Floyd Mayweather Jr. faces criminal charges
Fast forward almost two-hundred years and we have Floyd Mayweather Jr. or “Pretty Boy” Floyd or “Money” Mayweather or now you could call him “Felonious” Floyd or Floyd “the Felon” if you prefer. The undefeated, remarkable talent that is Floyd Mayweather Jr. has not been too remarkable as a citizen. He’s facing eight criminal charges including four felonies from a domestic incident with the mother of his children in which he allegedly assaulted her and threatened the lives of his kids. He also faces a separate case of misdemeanor assault for poking a security guard in the face outside his Las Vegas residence. Mayweather accused Pacquiao of taking performance enhancing drugs
After declining to fight Manny Pacquiao twice before due to his baseless claim that Pacman was taking performance enhancing drugs and only Olympic style random blood testing would suffice, Mayweather still had a third chance to cash in on a potential $50 million and the opportunity to show the world who the pound-for-pound king of boxing is. Now he has a chance of going to prison and permanently closing the book on a legendary fight that never happened.
Mayweather vs. Pacquaio the superfight we may never see Images
Top Rank’s Bob Arum did all he could to reel Mayweather in to fight his man, Pacquiao. It’s the match every fight fan in the world wants to see. For casual fans, it’s the only fight period they want to see. A superfight that would likely break revenue records, but sadly for the sport of boxing may never happen.
Pacquio to fight Shane Mosley at MGM Grand in Las Vegas
Pacquiao continues to shine as Mayweather Jr. deals with his legal problems out in the desert and ponders what could have been. The lucky winner in all this is “Sugar” Shane Mosley, who had been campaigning for a fight with Pacquiao and the big money that comes along with it. He gets his shot against Pacquiao on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Showtime pay-per-view while Mayweather, who beat Mosley handily, sits at home and awaits his trial. Mayweather self-destructs and may never fight again
A stunning display of self-destruction. Not that we are surprised by all this. Many critics of Mayweather believe he is ducking Pacquiao in order to protect his undefeated record and that this latest incident was just another way for him to stay out of the ring. Others feel it’s the “Pretty Boy” wanting to control the terms of the fight and unable to deal with the fact that Bob Arum controls the most popular fighter in the world. Whatever the case may be, Mayweather is now guaranteed to keep his undefeated record in tact because he won’t be fighting anytime soon, if ever again. Pacquio and Mosley invade Mayweather’s territory
It was too much for Mayweather to bear this past Saturday when Pacquiao and Mosley invaded his home turf. Like angry kid who lost out and in need of attention, Mayweather tweeted links to Pacquiao’s three losses. A pathetic act from a man desperate to be back in the limelight. He has no one to blame for where he is at but himself. What Mayweather doesn’t realize is the fact that no one cares about Pacquiao’s losses years ago, the latest being Eric Morales in a close fight that he later avenged twice over. Today, Pacquiao is the king of boxing and one of the most famous athletes in the world, not to mention congressmen. Pacquio visits President Obama in the Oval Office at the White House
Mayweather cannot seem to deal with Pacquiao being treated as the best fighter in the world. If that’s the case, he should have stepped up to the plate and fought him instead of using every excuse possible not to. Now he got to hear, like the rest of the world, about Pacquiao visiting President Obama in the Oval Office at the White House on Tuesday. Pacquiao went to Washington D.C. to meet with Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, whom he recently campaigned for, and then had a 10-minute audience with the President during which they talked sports and politics. Hero versus villain
The difference in manner and humility between the two pound-for-pound greats is striking. Even though Mayweather posted video links to his defeats and an earlier outrageous video filled with racist remarks when he was preparing to fight Antonio Margarito, Pacquiao continues to be gracious without a hint of resentment. When asked last week about fighting Mayweather during an interview on Friday night fights, Pacquiao showed why he is such a beloved figure in his native Philippines and across the boxing landscape. “Right now, I’m praying for his personal problem. Hopefully he can — everything will be okay and he can fight again in boxing.”
Will Floyd Mayweather ever fight Manny Pacquiao?
The 100 million dollar question remains, “Will he ever fight Pacquiao?” If not, it will be the greatest disappointment in the history of the sport and the man who nicknamed himself “Money” will not be getting his and just like Tom Molineaux from the bare-knuckle age, Mayweather will go down as another sad example of a boxer who goes down in flames.
