Casual Talk from Hollywood, California – If Rachel Donaire thinks that when we, the media, had touched on the topic centering on the controversy of the father and son, Nonito Donaire, Sr. and Nonito Donaire, Jr., affecting her and their entire family, was one for purposes of enriching ourselves with the number of hits we generated from our readers, then she must be wrong.

I just hope that Rachel would take my rhetoric at face value.
It must be presumptuous on my part, on the other hand, to tell Rachel this: many of us from the media have noble, multiple academic professions and, in fact, are economically stable, than what she thinks of us, than just a few dollars of revenues from the number of views we share. Other than just being journalists, many are lawyers, doctors, nurses, engineers and even successful businessmen and etchetera. And writing is their passion. They do not dissolve in the solvent of commercial communication and synergistic self-promotion. They are rooted in independence. And they tell the next big trend.
As for me, I write pieces based on the inspiration I get at such moment of revealing. And I am not beholded to any dollars from any of the fighter’s purse, nor am I enslaved to their wishes. And I would not reduce myself as mere public relations agents or sycophants to the evils of bribery and stupidity. Just like my colleagues, I must maintain independence from those I cover. I only serve an independent monitor of power, that which I provide a forum of public criticism and compromise. And I believe I exercise my personal conscience relevant to Donaire,Jr.’s star power potential. I dissect his qualities and expose them, regardless of whether they are positive or negative.
What Rachel so boldly portrayed about us, the correspondents, is a cheap shot. But, as for me, it’s okay. That’s her opinion.
In my case, I touched on that same issue primarily about the “falling out” of the father-and-son tandem and all other related issues simply because I felt the intensity of the old man’s agony. I am a father of two boys, and a husband of a hardworking Filipina. And my intent was to make the young Donaires be aware that, despite economic success in this land of milk and honey, respecting our parents is still relevant in today’s world. I suppose my articles about the same issue, as published, are well-balanced. I even have pressed on the aspect of stimulating them to think of celestial matters rather than temporal ones. In fact, I have cited that I am hopeful a reconciliation will soon come to pass.
On one hand, ardent boxing fans even suppose that without the media’s intervention, the Donaire reconciliation could not have happened this fast, in that haunting issues surrounding them could not have been clarified, if not rectified.
Like what these two, Chino and Recah Trinidad (father and son tandem in the media) believe, I have dealt the issue much deeper in a spirtual perspective even to the point of jeopardizing my image, it’s because I do have compassionate regard about the moral issues beyond boxing.
One thing, though, Donaire, Jr., in some way, can be a source of pride of the Maharlikan nation. He can be a catalyst in enriching the heritage – for better family values, that which a better moral rectitude must be embraced from one generation to another.
At this juncture, nevertheless, I rather join hands with the Donaire family knowing that our prayers are all heard.
More power and blessings!
