Taguig preparing to fete city’s adopted son Donaire

MANILA, Philippines ? The Taguig City government announced that it is organizing a hero?s welcome for Filipino boxing champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire Jr., an adopted son of the city, following his knock-out victory against Mexican fighter Fernando Montiel over the weekend.

Donaire stopped Montiel in devastating fashion in the second round of their world title fight at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada, and captured the World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) Bantamweight titles.

Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano said that Donaire?s win brought huge honor to the city since the latter defeated a highly-regarded opponent in spectacular fashion.

?It is only right and fitting that we give a hero?s welcome to Donaire because aside from being Taguig?s adopted son, he gave not only the city but the entire country quite a huge distinction,? Cayetano said.

Cayetano said the hero?s welcome for the adopted son of Taguig is seen to take place next week.

Cayetano has instructed Secretary to the Mayor Marco Evangelista to make the preparations for the planned grand welcome for Donaire.

Last Sunday, Cayetano gave residents of the city a great chance to see how Donaire destroyed Montiel in the pay per view world title fight which was shown at jam-packed venues which included Tipas Elementary School, Tenement Covered Court and the Taguig City University auditorium.
