Former World Boxing Council super flyweight champion Gerry Pe?alosa showed up for the weigh in of a boxing promotion he is scheduled to see action in the United States only to experience what is perhaps the most embarrassing moment of his career. It was reported earlier (not in this paper) that controversial American promoter Murad Muhammad has booked Pe?alosa for a ring collision with one-time International Boxing Federation bantamweight challenger Reynaldo “El Doberman” Hurtado supposedly today (RP time) at Club Cinema in Pompano Beach, Florida.
But when he went to the weigh-in yesterday, Pe?alosa instantly turned red in embarrassment after he was told by the promoters that the reigning World Boxing Federation jr bantamweight titlist is not included in the card.
“When Gerry went to the weigh-in, they (promoters) told him why you are here, you have no fight,” stated American boxing patron Michael Koncz in a text message relayed to The Freeman by ALA Boxing Stable prodigy Z Gorres.
Koncz is involved in helping Filipino boxers who have fights in the US in little ways he can.
Gorres further bared when the promoters asked if Pe?alosa has a fight contract, Koncz said the comebacking Filipino warrior could produce none.
A source, however, said Pe?alosa’s opponent backed out during the weigh-in.
“It’s a very sad situation for Gerry,” said international promoter Sammy Gello-ani, who has worked with Pe?alosa when the latter was still under the aegis of the famed ALA Stable.
“If I were in Gerry’s place, naturally I will get angry. It’s a very embarrassing situation,” said Gorres, who was with Pe?alosa undergoing a strict training regimen under the watchful eyes of Buddy McGirt in Orlando, Florida for two months now.
After the loud-mouthed Murad flopped several times to arrange a fight for Gorres, the ALA fighter decided to return home.
“McGirt understands my situation that is why he let me go home. It is not good for a boxer to keep on training even without a scheduled fight. I might get burned out,” said Gorres, who arrived in Cebu yesterday afternoon.
