NO wonder World Boxing Association mandatory challenger Jose Navarro and an army of fighters are avoiding Z “The Dream” Gorres like a plague.
On Sunday, in the opening fight of the Manny Pacquiao-Erik Morales showdown, Gorres easily dismantled Fil-Am Glenn Donaire, a former US Olympic qualifying campaigner, in the opening round of their scheduled eight-rounder at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
The end came in two minutes and three seconds when Donaire said he won’t be able to continue because he “couldn’t see.”
Donaire called it quits after getting a right cross from Gorres, the former Philippine flyweight champion. Donaire had earlier went down from an accidental headbutt from the Filipino.
The win improved Gorres’ record to 19-1-1, 11 KOs while Donaire, who was born in General Santos City and now lives in California, saw his record dip to 13-2, with 8 KOs.
Gorres, now promoted by Murad Muhammad and trained by Buddy McGirt in Orlando, Florida, was originally slated to face World Boxing Council (WBC) superfly mandatory challenger Jose Navarro.
Navarro withdrew from the fight with Gorres presumably to avoid jeopardizing his rider status against the winner of the Katsushige Kawashima-Masamori Tokuyama WBC 115-lb championship.
