Baseball has the majestic malaprops of Yogi Berra, many of which were created by sportswriters.
“NInety percent of this game is half mental” is one.
“The restaurant is so crowded nobody goes there any more” is another.
“If you come to fork in the road…take it” is a third example.
One of my favorites is Yogi’s beloved wife Carmen telling him she had gone to see Dr. Zhivago.
“What;’s wrong now, dear?” Berra supposedly answered.
Boxing used to have the verbal gaffes of Murad Muhammad who once described a Lou Duva handled fighter as “being from that place with the little boats…you know Venezuela…”
As Muhammad, former promoter for Donovan “Razor” Ruddock and briefly for Manny Pacquiao, often puts it, “Correct me if I am right.”
I hereby nominate trainer Roger Mayweather, former world champ and L’il Floyd’s uncle, as the new ring king of malaprops.
In an uproarious interview with Examiner colleague Chris Robinson, Mayweather was asked about the no jail plea he took recently on assault and related charges in which the complainant was a female boxer named Melissa “Guard Your Grill” St. Vil.
Las Vegas police reported seeing Mayweather choking St. Vil when they showed up on the scene.
But leave it to Mayweather to orally mangle the situation.
He told Robinson:
“I had some case, some bullsh*t about some woman. A woman who hit me in the head with a lamp in my condiment. I got a case. I got to go to trial. For what? She should be going to trial. She hit me. I didn’t hit her. I feel good to get it behind me. To be honest it was all bullsh*t anyways. How are you going to charge me when somebody hits me with something I own? I don’t understand that.”
So there you have it, all of you who wanted to know how the “Black Mamba” was able to “cut the mustard” and remain out of the slammer.
So to for all of you who wanted to “ketchup” on the criminal allegations.
He claims St. Vil whacked him in the head with one of his personally owned lighting fixtures.
And she struck him in his “condiment.”
I would ask the Mayweathers’ hometown correspondent David Mayo for a condiment comment but I’m still laughing too hard.
I, for one, “relish” Roger’s further “enlightening” remarks.
This man doesn’t know the difference between Picalilly and Picadilly, with or without the bun.
