Gejon departs for South Africa

Philippine champion Elmer Gejon of the Wakee Salud Stable flies out to South Africa today for his June 24 showdown with South African Tshepo Lefele for the vacant WBC International mini-flyweight title in East London, South Africa.

The Mandaue City-based Gejon departs at 12:30PM today with trainer Brix Flores.

Gejon, in an interview, has indicated he is in the best shape of his life for the biggest fight of his career, as he has sparred against his younger brother and WBA No. 1 minifly Eriberto “Yukka” Gejon, Gabriel Pumar, Apol Suico and Alex Aroy. All his sparmates are undefeated prospects.

Lefele (11-1), ranked WBO No. 10 and WBC No. 20, is a protege of promoter Branco Milenkovic and is touted as South Africa’s best 105-pounder. Gejon, meanwhile, is ranked WBO No. 6 and WBC No. 17.

“It will be a perfect opportunity for Lefele to impress his new promotional backers in his debut under the BSP banner and at age 24, to prove that he is arguably the best mini-flyweight in the country,” said a press release from the BSP.

” I am very excited to make my debut under BSP, although I know I am in for a very tough fight,” said Lefele.” I know these Filippinos come to fight, but it’s an opportunity for me to rise above the occasion and win that coveted WBC green belt.”
