Rexon Flores of the Philippines sent down Indon Alwy Alhabsy of Indonesia twice in the third and dominated the 12-round bout en route to a unanimous decision win Saturday night to retain his World Boxing Organization Asia Pacific flyweight title at the Olivarez Sports Center in Sucat, Paranaque.
Judge Edwin Sese saw the bout 117-109, Rudy Perez penned it 119-109, while Virgilio Garcia had it 116-110 all in favor of the Bebot Elorde-managed Flores, currently ranked WBO no. 6.
The win improved the 22-year-old Flores’ record to 14-2-2 with 7 knockouts while Alhabsy moved down to 17-5-5 (6 KO’s).
WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo, in an interview, revealed that it was “a great fight, toe-to-toe action with the Indon going down in the third but able to recover well in the latter rounds.”
Panoncillo had earlier announced that a Flores victory will put him in a good position to vie for the WBO world title soon.
