Flores in crucial fight

WBO Asia Pacific flyweight champion Rexon Flores may be one or two fight away from a potential bout with WBO flyweight king Omar “El Hurac?n” Narvaez of Argentina.

Flores, who is the topnotch Asian contender in 112-lb division being ranked No. 6 in the world by the WBO, could face the undefeated Narvaez (19-0-2, 13 KOs), if he puts on a good show against Indon challenger Alwi Alhabsy in the main event of “Summer Heat in Paranaque” card on Saturday (Sunday in the USA) at the new Olivarez Sports Center in Sucat, Paranaque City.

Gabriel “Bebot” Elorde, who is Flores’ promoter and manager, said with help of WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo, a Filipino-American from Hawaii, his ward may pit against Narvaez possibly sometime in October.

“The turning point of Flores’ career depends in the result of his title defense on Saturday,” said Elorde. “If he can impress against Alhabsy, it will most likely he’ll get the shot for a world title.”

The admission of the international elite boxing show is free courtesy of former Paranaque Mayor Dr. Pablo Olivarez, Near Water 02 and Family Rubbing Alcohol. The Ringside@Elorde televises the card on a slightly basis in its second Saturday presentation from 11 p.m to 12 midnight over NBN Channel 4.

Flores and Alhabsy, who arrived yesterday afternoon with promoter Pino Bahari from Jakarta, will size each other up in the official weigh in before Panoncillo’s supervision at the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) office in Makati City today.

The 22-year old right-handed Flores sports a 13-2-2 win-loss-draw recordd with 7 knockouts while Alhabsy, who aims to steal the international limelight from the Filipino prospect, has 17-5-5 with 6 knockouts.
