I have seen, heard and marveled at the words and antics of the man who should be in Manny Pacquiao’s post Sugar Shane Mosley future.
This fellow is mad, this fellow is bad and this fellow is dangerous to know.
Sometimes, it’s hard to discern where the Barnum & Bailey Circus act ends and his boxing skills take over but Ricardo Mayorga–win or lose against Miguel Cotto on March 12–can be the perfect foil for Pacman especially should shy, retiring guy Floyd Mayweather Jr. prefer to remain a wallflower.
It’s not your everyday fighter who can take a business reunion of 40 years archrivals Bob Arum and Don King and turn it into a mere sideshow but Mayorga, the nutty Nicraguan, did just that Wednesday at BB King’s in Times Square.
It was Madness in Midtown as Mayorga spewed insult after insult at the stoic Puerto Rican boxer, including at one point referring to Miguel’s mitts as “woman’s hands” compared to his own “man’s hands.”
(Perennial skeptic and naysayer Ricardo Lois says Mayorga-Pacman is an absurdity which, based on his erratic track record, means Manny and Ricardo is a lock, a sure cinch to happen.)
This came just after Mayorga praised female boxer and recent attmepted murder victim Christy Martin (husband Jim is locked up, charged with shooting and stabbing her) and said he was all for women’s rights. Martin was accompanied on the podium by strident celebrity attorney Gloria Allred. And she does wear all red.
Like I say, folks, you’ve got to hand it to Mayorga…and, if you don’t, he’ll just snatch whatever he wants anyway.
I was sitting with Edison Ballroom host Allan Wartski and Arum and King hammed it up and Wartski noted that Uncle Don had an audio advantage over Tio Roberto.
“Yeah,” Wartski said, “Don doesn’t need the microphone.”
Mayorga ranted, Mayorga raved and, at first, Cotto seemed nonplussed.
“No one,” Cotto said, looking sternly at Mayorga, “wins with the mouth.”
Mayroga nearly foamed at the mouth and kept on ragging on Cotto.
My Spanish may be muy malo but I did pick out the term “payaso” directed by Cotto to Mayorga several times.
That means clown, you clowns.
“Yesterday,” Cotto said, “he was was very nice, serene. I think he’s just excited with all the cameras here.”
With all the bombast, all the blater it took an amused Emanuel Steward, trainer for Cotto and a one bout attempted trainer of wildman Mayorga, to sum up the lively proceedings.
“When it comes to trash-talking,” the Kronk Gym legend said, “you’re the best, no doubt about it.
“And everything he said…he believes.”
I know what I believe.
I believe this up close and personal view of Mayorga’s brand of craziness will capture Arum’s imagination.
Cotto should beat Mayorga, sure, but who cares? Arum will then match Cotto against Antonio Margarito in their natural revenge bout.
But what about a doubleheader?
Cotto seeks to extract revenge against the Mexican.
And Good Guy Pacquiao takes on evildoer Mayorga.
Tell me that promotion would not be as entertaining as all getout.
If Mayweather is still balking by the autumn, bring on Mayorga.
He and Manny would be brilliant, the hero against the heel.
