Not Morales, not Berto, Juan Manuel Marquez picks Amir Khan

As Golden Boy Promotions works on finalizing his next opponent, lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez announced the fighter he would like to face.

At the top of Marquez’s wish list you will not find Erik Morales, Robert Guerrero, or Andre Berto.

In an interview with ESPN Deportes Jaime Mota, Marquez stated, that given the choice, he would box Amir Khan next.

Marquez stated that during a meeting in Los Angeles Golden Boy offered him three potential rivals, includling Guerrero and Morales.

But regardless to the options, Marquez fancies a fight with the World Boxing Association junior welterweight champion.

“If a fight could be made at 140 pounds,” said Marquez, “I would like to fight Khan.”

Though most believe Marquez will fight Morales next, the lightweight champion stated that Golden Boy Promotions felt a pay per view bout between the pair could be a risky business decision due to the fact that Morales is rebounding from a long lay off and has not looked to be the same fighter he was years ago.

Marquez did detail how a Morales fight could be more lucrative.

“If Golden Boy took the risk of a Morales fight, it should be at 140 pounds,” said Marquez. “Then we could both be battling for a world championship in a fourth weight class, making history and more attractive for fans.”

No Mexican fighter has ever held world titles in four divisions, but a glance at the status of the four major sanctioning bodies at 140 pounds shows that there are no vacant titles available for Morales and Marquez to dispute.

Marquez stated he has completely dismissed a bouth with Guerrero, due to the “high risk, low reward” nature of the bout and made no public comment regarding Berto.

A decision on Marquez’s next bout could come as early as next Tuesday.
