Big Gary Shaw: Hopkins should’ve known American only wins by double KO in Canada

If there is such a word as flappable, meaning someone who is not unflappable, I would apply it to the often excitable and histrionic Big Gary Shaw.

But the New Jersey based promoter was cool, calm and collected when I rang him up Sunday night for his comments about the Bernard Hopkins-Jean Pascal disputed majority draw and what WBC light heavyweight champion Pascal must do next.

He was in Puerto Rico with a fighter but, Shaw said, another scoring controversy in La Belle Provence (Quebec) did not surprise him.

“We know about that. Chad Dawson and I know for a fact to have knock out a guy in Canada twice to get any decision,”

Shaw said. “When you’re fighting in Canada, that’s how it is. I did not watch the Hopkins bout, I just heard it was close.”

Shaw is sitting on contractual rights emanting from the agreement for the Aug. 14 Montreal bout in which local favorite Pascal won the green and gold belt from the unbeaten for 10 pro years New Haven, Conn., fighter.

Scores were 108-101 and 106-103 twice, favor of Laval resident Pascal, when the Dawson bout was halted in the 11th round by the ringside physician due to gash on the American’s right eye.

As you can imagine, neither Shaw nor Dawson liked that scoring even though they returned to the U.S. with a TKO loss. Despite his fears of officiating in Canada,

Shaw conceded that Pascal’s team can put the Dawson rematch in Quebec or wherever they so desire.

“They have the right because he won in August,” Shaw said. “We know what we’ve got to do, we’ve got to go up there and knock this guy out to win.”

Shaw said Dawson-Pascal II will likely go in March or April.

He also said Richard Schaefer’s squawking about BHop getting robbed by pen and paper Saturday night is of no concern to him. The Golden Boy executive is threatening lawsuits and cried out for an immedaite Hopkins-Pascal redo.

“Richard’s got the right to do or say whatever he wants but we’ve got a contract with Pascal.”

Pascal is now 26-0-1 while Dawson, who has shed manager Mike Criscio and realinged himself with rap mogul/adviser James Prince, is 29-1.

After losing to Pascal, Dawson complained about being held and butted.

Pascal’s contract allowed, if he beat Dawson, to take on interim bout before fighting the American a second time.
