There has been talk that Philippine President Benigno Aquino III is invited to the birthday bash of Rep. Manny Pacquiao in General Santos City this coming Friday.
Imagine how awkward will it be for the highest official of the land to be seen sitting in the same table with ?The Godfather? who is celebrating his 32nd birthday ove the weekend.
As has been said, Rep. Pacquiao?s birthday celebration on December 17 is themed after the classic gangster movie complete with invitation cards that have him sitting in a sofa smoking a cigar.
That is the trouble with theme parties. They restrict the elbow room of guests that are invited.
Rep. Pacquiao, or at least his wife Jinkee, may have chosen the theme innocently but it behooves them to be circumspect in projecting images of themselves before the public eye. Moreso when some of their publicists and drumbeaters are prematurely floating Pacquiao?s eventual jab at the presidency.
Whoever suggested the idea or who failed to weigh in on the consequences of such an innocuous try at Hollywood make believe is not doing the congressman from Sarangani any favors.
It may tickle his imagination pink but it is downright offensive for a public official to adopt that as a party theme. In fact, Rep. Pacquiao should now be beyond this kind of gimmickry.
I do not mean to disrespect the president by whining over his choice of going or not going to Rep. Pacquiao?s birthday bash. But his communications guys should be bashed like no other if they fail to draw a good story why the president is attending despite the politically incorrect birthday theme.
Nobody would care, and it is nobody?s business, if Pacquiao was not a member of the Philippine House of Representative. But he is.
There are some fetishes and fetishes. This one does not fit Rep. Emmanuel D. Pacquiao who now occupies a position of public trust.
