Fundamentally someone could make a strong argument that he’s better than Manny Pacquiao. He’s got wicked speed, wicked timing, and one punch knockout power. Ask Vic Darchinyan how hard Nonito Donaire can punch. The “Filipino” Flash would be a huge star IF, and it’s a big IF, Manny Pacquiao were never to be born. Unfortunately for Nonito, Manny Pacquiao was born, and he chose the same sport that he did.
Pacquiao’s accomplishments in boxing are of legendary status, and a fighter like him only comes around once every 50 years or so. Manny has conquered 8 weight divisions and has cemented his name into the boxing Hall of Fame. The very second he is eligible to be voted in, he will be voted in. With all of this success, it’s difficult for a guy like Donaire to get the love that he so rightfully deserves.
Nonito Donaire is one heck of a fighter. In fact, he’s a flat out great fighter. The only fight that he ever lost was back in 2001 against a guy named Rosendo Sanchez. Guess what? Sanchez only fought 5 times and wrapped up his career in 2001. Call it a fluke, it’s a safe bet that it was.
Donaire will more than likely fight Fernando Montiel next, a fight that should be explosive. His explosive speed and power poses a threat to anyone that steps into the ring against him. A win over Montiel would only reinforce the fact that he’s a great fighter. With that said, even if he does win in impressive fashion, the giant Pacquiao machine will still overshadow him.
It will take a Pacquiao retirement for Donaire to even begin to emerge from the shadows. I personally love to watch Donaire fight. His fundamentals, his speed, and his dangerous one punch knockout power is enough to leave you at the edge of your seat. Don’t blink in a Donaire fight, because you could miss something big.
I remember when he knocked out the arrogant Vic Darchinyan. I was with a few of my Filipino friends at a sports bar in Jackson, MS. I remember telling the folks that were watching the fight to watch closely. I told him that the kid from The Philippines is tough as nails, and dangerously fast. Sure enough, a few rounds later Darchinyan was inspecting the inside of his eye lids.
Donaire is a fantastic fighters, and hopefully he will get the full respect and exposure that he deserves. For now, it’s the Manny Pacquiao show, and there is only room for one King.
