Not sure if this is a Lou DiBella self-inflated trial balloon or something precipitated by Miguel Cotto?s desire not to wait until next summer for a fight but two-way discussions are being had between Foghorn Lou and Cotto promoter Bob Arum about making a Sergio Martinez-Cotto bout for March or April.
One in the know observer told me Tuesday night that the Cotto camp has chafed at Arum?s plan to make a bout between the Puerto Rican and ailing now (influenza) Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for June. (Chavez finally dropped out of his scheduled Saturday night PPV main event in Anaheim and Jose Pinzon is subbing against Pawel Wolak and “Filipino Flash” Nonito Donaire attains main go status by subtraction.)
That would be part of a doubleheader including the comeback from injury of ex-WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman, perhaps at the Meadowlands what with Madison Square Garden closed the next three summers for sorely neeed renovation.
?The pitch to Cotto is to fight with Sergio?s WBC middleweight title at stake so Miguel really gets a solid payday and has nothing to lose. Cotto would not risk the WBA 154-pound crown he won over ther one-legged Foreman at Yankee Stadium last June,? this fight guy said.
According to the insider, ?Arum seems midly interested but maybe Cotto will keep the pressure on. So far Bob has not said no and not said yes.?
DiBella is also touting an Irish Andy Lee-Martinez bout which Lee handler Manny Steward covets but which might be a hard sell to HBO.
