In the boxing ring, Sergio Martinez has the ability to chop down his rivals. Out of the ring, Martinez has a kind heart.
In fact, one of the things he cares about most is the damaged caused by domestic violence. And over the next few days, Martinez will be leaving his residence in Oxnard, Calif., for Las Vegas, where he will be visiting a woman’s shelter and some of its victims of domestic violence.
A 35-year-old WBC middleweight (160 pounds) king, Martinez (46-2-2, 25 knockouts) is coming off of last Saturday’s shocking, HBO televised, second-round knockout over fellow southpaw and challenger Paul Williams (39-2, 27 knockouts).
Williams ranked No. 3 on most lists among the best fighters pound-for-pound in the sport behind unbeaten six-time champion Floyd Mayweather (41-0, 25 KOs) and eight-division king Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KOs), current holder of the WBO welterweight (147 pounds) and WBC junior middleweight (154 pounds) belts.
In victory, Martinez not only avenged a disputed, majority decision loss from December during which both fighters were dropped in the first round, but he also made a strong argument for Fighter of the Year honors, given that he was coming off of April’s unanimous decision that dethroned Kelly Pavlik as middleweight king.
